A major reason why New York City is so popular is because of the world renown attractions it has to offer. Statue of Liberty - Located in the middle of New York Harbor, this 46m tall statue was a gift from the French in 1886. ''The statue is of a robed female figure representing Libertas, the Roman goddess of freedom, who bears a torch and a a tablet upon which is inscribed the date of the American Declaration of Independence, 4 July, 1776. A broken chain lies at her feet. The statue is an icon of freedom and of the United States: a welcoming signal to immigrants arriving from abroad.'' 9/11 Memorial - A beautiful memorial to remember and respect those who lost their lives when there was a terrorist attack on the Twin Towers on September 11, 2001. Times Square - A major commercial intersection located in Manhattan. Brooklyn Bridge - The 486.3m bridge over the East River. It has connected Brooklyn and Manhattan since 1883, when it was completed. Central Park - An 843 acre urban park which opened in 1857. Empire State Building - A 103-story skyscraper which is 443m high. It is currently the fourth tallest skyscraper in the United States of America. Events With so much development, New York City is the perfect city to host world class events. New York City Marathon - An annual marathon through New York City. It is the largest marathon in the United States of America and is also one of the World Marathon Majors. Tribeca Film Festival - Founded in 2002 to celebrate New York CIty as a major film making center and to contribute to the long-term recovery of lower Manhattan after the terrorist attacks in 2001. Museum Mile Festival - For one day in June, 10 museums, located from 82nd to 105th streets on Fifth Avenue, open their doors to the public for free and play host to a block-party style festival. U.S. Open - This elite tennis tournament has taken place in New York City for 26 years. New York Chocolate Show - Each year in November, chocolate and pastry chefs from around the world convene at a chocolate festival, staged in a massive 13,000 square-foot exhibition space. Times Square New Year's Eve - Every December 31, 1 million people crowd into the heart of Manhattan to ring in the New Year and watch the crystal ball drop from the One Times Square tower. Tourism Tourism is a major part of New York City with 47 million tourist per year. The amazing attractions and events contribute to tourism significantly. Transportation With over 10 million commuters daily, it is essential that megacities have efficient transportation. New York City has one of the largest subway systems in the world, the world's first mechanically ventilated vehicular tunnel, aerial tramway, ferries, world class airports, bus services and an abundance of taxis. 110 million passengers pass through New York City's airports each year.
